GET TOGETHER- PRAYER BEATS WORRY ALL THE TIME
Php 4:6,7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Another New Year has come upon us. Once again, I didn’t make a list of goals for the coming year. Once again, I didn’t make a lot of New Year’s resolutions. As I have done in the past I did make a New Year’s commitment. I made a commitment to worry about nothing and to pray about everything.
Perhaps I should call that a goal that I am committed to seeing come to pass in my life. Praying and not worrying worked for Jesus and He said that it would work for us. The following verse is just one of several times that he tells us not to worry: “Mt 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
The Apostle Paul tells us to be anxious about nothing. The Greek term is merimnao, mer-im-nah’-o. It means to have an anxious concern based on apprehension about possible danger or misfortune.
I don’t think that Paul is telling us that there are not some things that we need to have a concern about. I think that what he is telling us is that worry will do nothing, but drain the energy out of us and have a negative effect on our witness for Christ. On the other hand when we take those concerns to God in prayer we have expressed a trust in Him that not only will He take care of us, but that He is at work in the situation, or circumstance.
How about you as you go into 2017? What things are making you anxious? Is it things that are going on in the culture, your family, relationships with others including other Christians? The Holy Spirit wants to show us all just what He can do in these circumstances. He is often waiting for us to call upon Him in prayer. Why not let one of your goals be this year to worry about nothing and to pray about everything?
Let Us Pray
Lord Jesus we often toss and turn and fret over situations and circumstances that You are just waiting for us to turn over to You. Help us all in 2017 to be a worry free taking it to the Lord in prayer people. We do this not only for our wellbeing, but for the wellbeing of others for such a time as this as we advance the Kingdom of God upon the earth.
